Charcoal Filters
How are the Filters Constructed? |
There are only four components needed to build the charcoal filter. These are charcoal, sand, cheesecloth, and a container for the filter. First, cut a small hole in the bottom of the container for the filtered water to come out of. Next, cover the hole with the cheesecloth, as this will keep the other parts of the filter from falling out of it. After this, add in the charcoal. You can either create the charcoal yourself, or you can purchase it at a local store. The charcoal then needs to be ground into a powder. Pour the charcoal powder into the container, then add in the sand. Create an additional layer of both the charcoal powder and sand in the container, and the filter is complete.

Is the Filter Expensive? This filter design is both simple and cost effective. Each component of the filter is not only easy to find, but often has multiple alternatives. For example, almost any container could be used to contain the filter. Cheesecloth can also be substituted with whatever cloth is most readily available. In addition it is possible to manufacture carbon. Many materials needed to construct a charcoal filter can be locally sourced, and the need to purchase components from abroad is often unnecessary.
